Telenovelas, Culture & Society Spring 2021

 I have never met anyone who has any sort of involvement in Telenovelas before other than someone being a viewer. However I was completely enlightened when our class spoke to Ilkin Tufekci. I could feel the passion while she spoke to our class and I then realized why she was well-known in the telenovelas industry. I really didn't understand why someone would want to be an actor for a telenovela. On first thought, it sounds glamorous to be a telenovela actor. You are famous for one and are well paid. Those two things alone make it very appealing. However, the more I learned in our class, the less I liked the idea of being a telenovela actor. The hours are brutal. Long hours on set of redundant work, repeating the same scene over and over again until the director feels it fully encapsulates all he hoped it would. You are basically living in an alter-reality more than you are present in the actual world. You wouldn't be able to be with your friends and family since for months at a

 Realmente disfruté de las conversaciones que tuvimos con todas las personas que trabajan en la industria cinematográfica. Disfruté especialmente la conversación con Ilkin Tufekci. Me impresionó mucho su pasión por ser actriz. A lo largo del semestre, me di cuenta de cuánto se dedicaba a la producción y al rodaje y al re-rodaje de una escena para corregirla. Pensé que el trabajo debía ser agotador y me pregunté cómo los actores no perdían la pasión. Mi pregunta fue respondida cuando Ilkin dijo que incluso cuando está tan agotada que está llorando, todavía está teniendo un buen día porque está en el set haciendo lo que le encanta hacer.         Coming into the semester, I did not know much about telenovelas but was very excited to learn about them. It meant I could dive deeper into knowing more about them than the stereotype that soap operas are given. Through weeks of learning from Dr. A, watching  Yo Soy Betty, la fea,  and speaking with writers, a distributor, and an actress, my knowledge of telenovelas has been completely transformed in the best way. These stories are beautifully crafted in order for audiences relate to and empathize with them. The audience learns a lot from the characters they identify with and the characters can shape how they live their lives. I know after this class my heart has been positively impacted by both Dr. A and the many characters she has shown us.         I was also very positively impacted by and learned a lot from our guest speakers, as they all had a unique perspective to share.  Lo pasé tan bien durante las conversaciones de Telenovela con quienes están involucrados con Telenovelas directamente. Dieron una visión maravillosa de su oficio y del arduo trabajo que se necesita para tener éxito en este negocio. Hablar con ellos me dio aún más respeto por ellos y su obvia pasión por su trabajo. También aprecié que, aunque había algunas barreras idiomáticas con algunos de nuestros invitados, pudimos tener una conversación fructífera y podía sentir la positividad y la calidez que irradiaban las pantallas de zoom. Estoy muy orgulloso de mí mismo. Terminé por completo mi primera telenovela. Vi los 60 episodios que duraban una hora. He visto otras series antes de que fueran nueve temporadas con 20 episodios. Por alguna razón esto era diferente. Cada episodio estaba completamente lleno de drama y giros de trama locos. Fue difícil mantenerme al día al principio, pero me enganché y me encantó. Creo que lo que más me interesó cuando me cansé viendo el programa fueron las situación tensas. Las situación tensas son muy importantes para las telenovelas y creo que las hace únicas. La idea de usar situación tensas en telenovelas comenzó en el negocio del cigarro cuando los escritores del conde de Monte Cristo mantuvieron a los trabajadores en la fábrica al borde de sus asientos todos los días.  As we draw closer to the end of the semester and finalize the course,  I wanted to draw upon our learning experience with the professionals from the telenovela industry. In other words, I would like to reflect upon one of our telenovela conversations.  I'd like to start by discussing El Chascas. This was probably my favorite telenovela conversation. From the start, he was very upbeat and excited to be with the class. One of the key takeaways that I got from him was his dedication to inclusion. What does this mean? He elaborated upon how he drew upon instances from his own life and incorporated them into telenovelas. This meant including same sex couples, very real instances of homophobia, and so much more. Why is this so important for telenovelas? I think that it is important to have a visual representation of real world experiences. We discussed in class a few times how telenovelas have inspired people in real life. For instance, they have inspired women to file for divorce, and

Timing is Everything Streaming services and websites have completely revolutionized the way telenovelas are watched and consumed by audiences. Rather than fighting for time slots and having an entire country turning on their televisions at ten p.m. to watch the best one, countless telenovelas are readily available on services like Netflix or Telemundo’s website. This totally changes the manner in which telenovelas are watched and understood, and it definitely changed my experience watching “La Reina del Sur.”  We discussed so many times during class about the importance of the timing of telenovelas on their networks. Networks will fight for a good time slot, many times between eight and ten at night. This aspect of competition challenges telenovelas to create something worthy of a good time slot. They have to find a way to impress and engage viewers so much that they become the favorite telenovela to watch out of the many options. In turn, this has caused telenovelas to become increasi

     One of the most insightful and engaging things I have gotten to take part in during my time at UGA were the conversations with telenovela writers, actors, and distributors for my Telenovelas, Culture and Society course. I found these experiences impactful because we got to see the many faces of a telenovela. The entire semester we have learned about how multifaceted the creation of a telenovela is from creation to writing to production all the way to distribution. These conversations allowed for a better glimpse of just how meticulous this process is. While talking to these guests I found myself feeling inspired by how passionately they all spoke of their experiences and careers. I have noticed this quality in our professor Dr. A from the very beginning of the semester as well. This passion is what attracts the hearts and attention of audiences worldwide to telenovelas.  Although I enjoyed each and every conversation we took part in, my favorite interactions were with our two gues

En nuestra conversación con José Ignacio Valenzuela (cariñosamente conocido como Chascas), discutimos cómo los escritores de telenovelas se dedican a crear historias para una audiencia global. Antes de su debut como escritor y productor para Netflix, Valenzuela escribió su primera telenovela a los veinte años y ha seguido creando historias que comenzaron a distribuirse en América Latina. Para mi blog final, voy a escribir sobre las conversaciones durante las últimas clases.  Era una experiencia muy divertida y especial- nunca hubiera imaginado que podría hablar con estas personas.  Cada persona que vino fue única, esclarecedora, e interesante.  Aprendí mucho.  José Ignacio fue nuestra primera visita.  Él es el escritor y creador de “Quién mató a Sara.”  Es un poquito raro porque el día antes de venir a Chascas, recibí un anuncio sobre esta serie en mi cuenta de Netflix.  Lo que me gusta más sobre el Chascas es su energía y su pasión.  Su perspectiva sobre escribir es diferente también- no es como una telenovela normal, es más como una película de 100 hours.   Para continuar, Mikaela Pérez era impresionante también.  Ella es tan joven!  También, me gusta que su trabajo es en dos lugares que hemos hablado mucho- Istanbul y Venezuela.  Para esta presentación, le pregunté a ella como los obstáculos de las culturas afectan su trabajo y su vida.  Su respuesta era muy simple-

Just a couple of days ago Dr. A scheduled an opportunity for the class to be able to have a conversation with a Turkish actress. Her name is  Ilkin Tüfekci. I was very interested and pleased to be able to hear her insightful stories of the day to day task she has to deal with. Being an actress is nowhere near a simple as people have portrayed it.   Ilkin let us know that even though she loves acting her days are very very long and usually pretty stressful. I could not imagine the amount of time and patience it takes to not only memorize all of your lines but to be on set for many hours.   Ilkin let us know that even if she is on set all day long that she may not even accomplish one scene due to retakes and small details.  The class asked  Ilkin when she decided to become an actress and how soon do you need to start to be successful in this career.   Ilkin told us that she started s a small child and she saw that as something that was necessary to be successful in this field. New Communications The telenovela conversations have been an unexpected and pleasant experience this semester. Most of them have been in Spanish, which I am familiar and comfortable with. However, I think the one that stood out to me the most was the conversation with Turkish actress Ilkin Tüfekci. The language barrier between her and all of us was incredibly evident, but it was really interesting to me how everyone made it work and we were able to have a really honest and insightful conversation with her. I know the goal of this class is definitely to go outside of our comfort zones and gain something from what we experience in that, so I tried to pay close attention. Although Ilkin was so willing to share so much about her personal experiences with the Turkish world of dizis with us, it was nearly impossible to not notice the language barrier and get some significant takeaways from that in itself.  Ilkin made her openness and willingness to share things with us evident from the begin

     En clase, hemos hablado con mucha gente increíble en el mundo de telenovelas. Es muy especial a hablar con gente sobre las cosas que no puede ver en una novela. Mi conversación favorito fue con Ilkin Tüfekci. Ella es una actriz de Turquía,  y antes de esta clase, no sabía mucho sobre Turquía, especialmente que ellos tiene un forma de telenovelas (dizis). Su primera lengua es turco, y fue divertido a ver Profe Carolina y Ilkin habla en turco porque nunca he oido esta lengua antes de esta clase. Otra cosa que me gustó sobre la conversación fue su amor para su trabaja, especialmente para el teatro. Ella mencionó que las emociones que siente son indescriptible, y que siente como el mundo cuando está actuando.  Globalization of Telenovelas is a direct reflection of the saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". The multiple remakes of many telenovelas but especially Ugly Betty shows how the industry itself is constantly taking ideas from one another and trying to become the very best. If a show becomes popular, another producer is going to try to use the shows plot scheme while incorporating his own twist. This industry shows how impatient viewers truly are. They want shows right now and aren't willing to wait for another season to come. They will start watching another program if a new season does not come out soon enough. It is imperative for companies to pump out episodes as fast as they can because the competitors are lurking behind them waiting for the opportunity to seize the momentum. Globalization of telenovelas shows that producers are willing to steal others ideas just for the opportunity to seize the momentum of others. The best defense against this tactic is
