A Reflection upon a Telenovela Conversation with El Chascas

As we draw closer to the end of the semester and finalize the course,  I wanted to draw upon our learning experience with the professionals from the telenovela industry. In other words, I would like to reflect upon one of our telenovela conversations.

I'd like to start by discussing El Chascas. This was probably my favorite telenovela conversation. From the start, he was very upbeat and excited to be with the class. One of the key takeaways that I got from him was his dedication to inclusion. What does this mean? He elaborated upon how he drew upon instances from his own life and incorporated them into telenovelas. This meant including same sex couples, very real instances of homophobia, and so much more. Why is this so important for telenovelas? I think that it is important to have a visual representation of real world experiences. We discussed in class a few times how telenovelas have inspired people in real life. For instance, they have inspired women to file for divorce, and also inspired women to look after their own health. All this being said, we see the very real impact that telenovelas have on society. El Chascas sees that and understands that. I think that it is very noble of him to incorporate these types of topics. Hopefully they will generate conversations that will steer people towards a more understanding point of view.

I have always said, "It's easier for people to make harsh judgements and criticize others when they don't view them as a person with real feelings. When you are far removed from them, it is so much easier to be more cruel." That is why I think that El Chascas work is so important because his stories humanize people. He takes topics like sam sex marriage and shows you that these are real people who can experience very real homophobia. I hope that it gives people a new perspective. I very much enjoyed talking to him and I appreciated his enthusiasm with us. I sincerely hope he continues his work because I believe he is making a real difference in the world.
