Telenovelas, Culture & Society Spring 2021

Durante la clase, discutimos las diferentes formas en que los roles de género presentan en las telenovelas según la cultura latinoamericana. El machismo es la idea que un hombre debe ser fuerte y siempre afirmando su dominio. Veo esto más en el personaje, Braulio. Braulio es el principal narcotraficante de la ciudad de El Carmen, donde la serie desarrolla. Es muy protector de su esposa y hija, sin embargo, es condescendiente. La mayoría de las veces , no les habla con franqueza y les miente en varias ocasiones, como cuando pretende que no organizó el robo de su propio coche para intimidar el novio de su hija. Noté que se enoja muy rápidamente y siempre recuerda la gente con la que está , en particular sus trabajadores, que él es el jefe. It is one thing to hear your teacher say something, but actually understanding and believing it is another. When Dr. A told us that “no one is immune to telenovelas,” I thought I knew what she meant. I assumed she was explaining how everyone likes telenovelas and they have an international reach. Now that I am a little further into watching my telenovela, “La Reina del Sur,” I understand that she meant that the grasp, the impact and the messages through the themes affect everybody; no one is immune.  One of the huge takeaways that has impacted me from the telenovela is experiencing that language barriers are extremely real. I was born in and have lived between Kentucky and Georgia, and I was raised by a completely English-speaking family. This upbringing has not involved many language barriers. When I first started watching my telenovela, I thought I would not have any trouble language wise. I speak and read Spanish well, and can hold a conversation easily. However, the task proved its

  Something that has recently stood out to me in class is the topic of education through telenovelas. Sometimes, writers add a twist such as sickness, cancer, or a death for no reason other than to add drama, while other times they add this twist in order to educate the audience. Viewers are so captivated by the characters and their stories that they become invested and care about these people as if they were actually their friend. I think it is brilliant for the writers to take advantage of the situation and educate their audience on topics that truly matter.             The topic that specifically stuck out to me was in the telenovela, Ciudad Bendita , written by Leonardo Padr ón, t hat showed the degenerative cognitive disease, Alzheimer’s. The character remembered an old friend but could not remember her own son, which shows how destructive and confusing the disease is for both the victim and the family members.             This story hit me in the heart as I recently watched m

     Soy alguien a quien le fascina intentar deconstruir la relación interconectada entre las identidades y cómo se relacionan con nuestras experiencias vividas. Como estudiante de estudios de la mujer, he tenido la oportunidad de analizar el impacto de la televisión y las películas en la audiencia de formas interesantes, a menudo discutiendo la importancia de la representación de las minorías. As we have analyzed the portrayals and representations of different types of people throughout this class, I started thinking about the portrayal of the family unit in telenovelas. Almost anyone who has taken a Spanish class knows the importance of the family in Latin culture. Often times people grow up in the same household as there grandparents. Respect of elders is deemed highly important. An example of this would be beginning a phone call with your mother by asking for a simple blessing. Our professor of ‘Telenovelas, Culture, and Society’ mentioned she does this every time she calls her mother in Venezuela. From previous classes I have also learned religion plays a huge part in the strength and unity of family in this culture. Catholicism greatly values the sanctity of marriage and divorce rates in Spanish speaking countries tend to be much lower than in other countries. Additionally, the portrayal of gender roles plays a huge part in this familial representation. In the telenovel

      Telenovelas are full of drama, love, scandal, and all other sorts of emotional appeals. While some people are drawn to the lust and love of a show, others might be drawn in by the build and suspense. Regardless of what a particular audience members appeal is, no one is immune to the telenovelas genre as there is an appeal for everyone. Given that telenovelas connect with all sorts of people with different backgrounds and environmental conditioning, they are also going to influence people differently. Telenovelas are fictional fantasy dramas that are widely popular across the globe. People grow up with these in their lives so they have direct influences on its audience members. Telenovelas fed on peoples desire for drama and suspense. If audience members view telenovelas all throughout their childhood, they might believe that life is an actual telenovela.   As I have continued watching, I have tried to incorporate and tie in what we have learned in class and see the prevalence of this information in El Dragón . One of these specific topics that I wish to explore is the role of gender, specifically women, in this particular telenovela. Before we even arrived at the topic of gender in class, there were a few glaring examples that made me want to explore the portrayal of women. I will start by saying that so far into my watching, El Dragón is a predominately masculine show. So far the protagonist and the antagonist/villian are both male. There are reoccurring female characters no doubt. What is interesting to me, though, is within the first few episodes the tone is set for how women are viewed. Cuando hay gente de color, mucho de los eventos en la novela representan la discriminación de gente de color que es presente en el mundo hispanohablante. Representación en el caso de 'La Esclava Blanca' es muy interesante. Es una novela histórica, en los tiempos de la esclavitud en Columbia. Porque es sobre la esclavitud, hay mucha gente de color por su puesto. Pero, asimismo la novela es basada en los sentimientos racistas del tiempo. Todo de las escenas revelan las condiciones brutales de los esclavos, y tiene mucho diálogo repúgnate sobre los esclavos. The Cinderella Story/La Reina del Sur Throughout telenovela history we have seen many different forms of Cinderella's. Teresa falls under the category of: "The Prostitute and the Prince." Teresa begins working at a night club called and many of the girls that work there are prostitutes. Teresa refuses to do this kind of work and chooses to be a waitress instead until she gets into some trouble. Then Marcelo Cáceres ,who is the governor of Melilla, comes to her rescue under the conditions that Teresa has to sleep with him in exchange for freedom. Teresa has no choice but to agree. This is just the beginning of her being "the prostitute" in the situation. Teresa then meets her prince: the handsome Santiago. Santiago is known as an excellent boat driver to smuggle drugs across borders. He is viewed as a hunk, not too smart at times, and often makes mistakes. Según Mauro Pereira Porto en su obra Realism and Politics in Brazilian Telenovelas , hay distinciones entre las telenovelas mexicanas, colombianas y brasileñas.  Dice, “it is possible to establish the following distinctions: the Mexican telenovela is more melodramatic; the Colombian is more devoted to adapting Latin American romances; the Brazilian is more realistic” (Porto 36).  Eso es interesante, porque la Reina del Sur es una telenovela de Telemundo- una red de televisión de los Estados Unidos.  Para este blog, creo que hay elementos similares a las telenovelas brasileñas porque los caracteres en la Reina del Sur no son demasiado dramáticos, demasiado emocionales ni demasiado locos.   Por ejemplo, también según Porto, “Brazilian telenovelas are also characterised by a tendency to weaken the distinction between fiction and reality” (Porto 37).  En la Reina del Sur , no hay situaciones imposibles o de sueños.  Para Teresa, es una situación difícil y no es romántica.  Ella está en p

La información que parece más interesante a mi es los origines de las telenovelas en las factorías de Cuba. Creo que la evolución de novela, a radionovela, a telenovela tiene una historia más práctica de que yo pensé antes de esta clase. Pensé que su creación fue solo para el entretenimiento, y no supo que tienen una historia con mucho significado.      En el mismo vano, pensaba que las telenovelas y soap operas son la misma cosa, y la diferencia es la lengua que usan. Ahora, yo sé que no es el caso. Aunque tienen cosas en común, como temas de amor, yo sé que muchos de las diferencias están basados en la estructura (por ejemplo, las telenovelas pasan mucho tiempo, pero tiene un final, y soap operas nunca terminan).      Originalmente quería elegir La Dueña, la telenovela Venezolana inspirada en el Conde de  Montecristo.  Me gustó que fuera considerada una de las mejores telenovelas de Venezuela y la  actuación me pareció  muy buena, según los clips que vimos en la clase. Sin embargo, no pude  encontrarlo en ningún servicio de  transmisión ni alquilarlo.      Empecé buscar otros servicios de transmisión, como Netflix, y decidí elegir The Mafia Dolls como  mi  telenovela. Elegí esta telenovela por dos razones. La primera razón es que estaba disponible en un  servicio de transmisión que ya tenía.   Antes de esta clase, mi única experiencia con una telenovela era la versión Netflix de Jane la Virgen. Sin embargo, he aprendido que esto está lejos de lo que una verdadera telenovela se supone que debe parecer. El programa de televisión carece de muchos elementos clave que hacen una telenovela.         The telenovela that I selected to watch is Yo soy Betty, la fea . This Colombian telenovela is about a girl named Betty, who interviews for a job as the secretary to the president of the company, Eco Moda. She is much more qualified for the job than her competition, Patricia, but initially loses out because she does not fit the standard of beauty that the interviewer expects her to meet. He says, "Ella es fea," when explaining why he does not believe she would be a good fit for the company.            Right at the start of the show, I decided to take a break to research the reality of societally-deemed "attractive" people getting treated differently than societally-deemed "unattractive" people. Some things I have always been interested in are drama and the Spanish language, so I had pretty high expectations coming into this course. Though I did not realize I was going to pick a telenovela to watch, I was excited at the thought of my “homework” being to watch a series. I began my research process looking for a telenovela that was unique and not “basic.” While I was picking my telenovela, I asked for input from my friends, hoping they would be able to find something interesting and more obscure. Ultimately I decided on watching La Reina del Sur, and it led to a really interesting thought about shows and the draw of popular telenovelas. Originally, I wanted to pick a telenovela that we had not spoken about in class. I really try to place value in finding interests that are unique and specific to me. Telenovelas reflect the morals and values of their audience members. Given that telenovelas are extremely popular in Hispanic countries, the episodes encapsulate some of the most important values of the individuals watching, family orientated values. These shows provide a real sense of comfort for those who watch, not just to escape to a love fantasy. Despite what they might have going on in their lives, telenovelas give those an escape and an ability to connect with their morals through the show. Hispanics have strong family ties and make it a priority to spend quality time with their loved ones typically every single week. The producers of telenovelas realize this and make the characters in the show display the same appeals for family. Family is essential the backbone of telenovelas so much so that the networks of a majority of the telenovelas are owned by families and have been passed down from generation to generation.  Mahaylee Grace I chose the Telenovela: La Reina del Sur, on Netflix. It was not my first choice as my telenovela but it has definitely caught my attention. I have already watched several episodes since we made our choice. I am having a hard time putting this one down. I was expecting very action filled scenes and there is a lot of that but they are driven by passion and love. The protagonist, Teresa Mendoza, is on the run for her life after her boyfriend Gȕero was shot to death. He was the first man she ever fell in love with and he treated her well. There are many flashbacks of their relationship and I thoroughly enjoy seeing the connection they have. It makes the action filled moments and deaths more dramatic and meaningful. Teresa soon comes to learn the kind of job that her boyfriend had and how his mistakes will possibly cost herself her life. So far, the only person somewhat looking out for Teresa’s safety and the only hope for her life is Epifanio. Epifanio is Gȕero’s family

A: As soon as I had my advising appointment for Spring 2021 and saw the class title, I knew I had to be in the class.        After doing some research, I decided to land on the Telenovela: El Dragón, on Netflix. It was among the highest rated Telenovelas on Netflix, so I decided to analyze this specific one. Upon watching the first episode, I was very impressed! Immediately I began to think about the Telenovela (I can't recall the name of it) that Dr. A discussed in class that was filmed in both India and Brazil. In El Dragón, it takes place in both Japan and Mexico. As I watched the first episode, I tried to find any discrepancies (errors in time zones, etc.) and I couldn't find any (at least after the first few episodes!)      After watching the first episode, I tried to decipher if this was a Rosa (traditional) telenovela, or a De Ruptura (realist). I think it falls more towards the De Ruptura side. At this point, considering I have not watched the whole series, I would label it as such: 75% De Ruptura and 25% Rosa. mainly because there is some romance involved. A lot of the plot focuses on

A mi me encanta los caracteres y sus personalidades, y me gusta la trama porque ya es complicada. Por eso, para mi primera publicación de este blog, quiero discutir las características típicas de las mujeres en las telenovelas en esta historia que me he dado cuenta.  Para empezar, yo se que Teresa, la protagonista, va a cambiar de una manera más fuerte y con más poder, pero en los primeros episodios y en los flashbacks, ella es una mujer típica en una telenovela.  Ella es muy inocente.  Cuando Teresa está hablando con Güero, dijo que no sabe como hacer el amor.  No tiene experiencias, y necesita su ayuda.  Para continuar, Teresa necesita la ayuda de Güero en muchos casos siguientes.  Por ejemplo, ella necesita protección de los enemigos de Güero.  Antes de la muerte de Güero, él explica a Teresa lo que ella necesita hacer si
