I chose the Telenovela: La Reina del Sur, on Netflix. It was not my first choice as my telenovela but it has definitely caught my attention. I have already watched several episodes since we made our choice. I am having a hard time putting this one down. I was expecting very action filled scenes and there is a lot of that but they are driven by passion and love.
The protagonist, Teresa Mendoza, is on the run for her
life after her boyfriend Gȕero was shot to death. He was the first man she ever
fell in love with and he treated her well. There are many flashbacks of their
relationship and I thoroughly enjoy seeing the connection they have. It makes
the action filled moments and deaths more dramatic and meaningful. Teresa soon
comes to learn the kind of job that her boyfriend had and how his mistakes will
possibly cost herself her life. So far, the only person somewhat looking out
for Teresa’s safety and the only hope for her life is Epifanio. Epifanio is Gȕero’s
family and also who he had been working for. He only assures her safety for so
long then she is on her own because of the kind of business that he is in.
The antagonist is Ramiro Vargas. He also works for Epifanio.
He is very determined to kill Teresa because of a debt owed by her boyfriend. In
my opinion, I think he is just blood thirsty and looking for a challenging
task. Teresa has definitely put up a good fight so far. He has caused many
problems for Teresa and I don’t think I have seen the last of him.
I have not come across a love triangle yet like we
mentioned in class, but I have a feeling it is coming when she makes it to the
Unites States. This Telenovela has some great qualities and very eye catching.
I am only a little ways into the Telenovela but I highly suggest it if you are
unsure about your choice. I can’t wait to see what I learn next!
I am watching La Reina del Sur too and I completely agree that this telenovela is a solid choice for this class. Now that it's toward the end of the semester and I have been watching it for a while, everything I've seen has reassured me that this telenovela is a great example of so many things that we have learned. It definitely has the aspects of things like beauty standards, representation of LGTBQ characters and lots of other topics that we covered. It has also been great in making me think beyond the show itself and question how it is making me feel. The ability of the writers and Kate del Castillo to have the audience supporting Teresa Mendoza despite her wildly illegal actions is really interesting.
